We were really looking forward to the Fourth of July weekend and doing some fun things as a family of three, but I really wondered if I’d make it that far. I’ve been having contractions for a few weeks now and am having trouble just walking.
I’ve been having to sit with my feet up quite a bit. I’m sure little Donut is really tired of mama not being able to play much.
But this weekend, Mr. DIH was home for 4 whole days. We started our Fourth with a neighborhood “parade.” I use that word loosely because we missed it since it only lasted about 5 minutes. However, the parade ended at the park that’s thankfully barely half a block from our house and where a BBQ had been set up. We met up with neighbors and enjoyed a meal that I didn’t have to cook.
Donut bounced in the bounce house, which meant just walking up to it, and jumping up and down a couple of times on the grass before deciding she really didn’t want to go in.
Later that night we went to a friend’s house for another BBQ. I had planned on making dessert but then realized I was crazy because I had zero capacity to get anything but a store bought cake. Instead, I settled on making a red, white & blue fruit salad.
We skipped fireworks since Donut goes to bed so early. Besides, us adults run out of steam by 8pm too. We’ll go when the kids are older.
We spent the next day together, just the 3 of us, playing and grilling and hanging out. On Saturday, my college roomie was visiting town and was sweet enough to stop by and bring us a yummy lunch. Mr. DIH and I then had a date night with an early dinner. Sadly, I had to miss dessert and cut our night short because I was having uncomfortable contractions.
All in all, we did have a great long weekend. Even though I’m in a lot of pain right now and can’t sleep, I’m thankful for the time we had this weekend before our newest member arrives. But at the same time, I really, really could use a good night’s sleep. I suppose that’s not going to happen for a few months is it?
